FGI Research Seminar: LiDAR beyond geometry: correspondence, deformation, and multi-modal multi-spectral sensing

In the October’s FGI Research Seminar we welcome a guest lecturer Professor Andreas Wieser from the University of ETZ Zürich, Switzerland. 

In this presentation, I will give an overview about the research focus of my group on enhancing the information extracted from point clouds. On the one hand, this refers to new sensor technology. We have developed a multi-modal multi-spectral (MM) LiDAR lab setup which measures distance and polarization-resolved power on 33 spectral channels filtered from a super-continuum laser source. On the other hand, I will summarize the data processing which allows us to obtain dense 3d displacement vector fields from conventional multi-temporal point clouds, as well as the data processing to obtain information on material and surface conditions from the MM-LiDAR data.

Andreas Wieser is a professor of Geosensors and Engineering Geodesy at ETH Zürich. He has a background in surveying from TU Vienna and TU Graz. After postdoc positions at the University of Calgary and the TU Graz, he worked in industry as a product manager. In 2009 he became a professor at TU Vienna, and in 2012 at ETH. His current research spans parameter estimation, development and calibration of sensor systems, multi-modal multi-spectral LiDAR, point cloud processing, and deformation monitoring.
