FGI is an international researcher and specialist in the field of geospatial data. In addition to geospatial data research and technologies, its research fields include satellite positioning, space geodesy, laser scanning, and geodata science and computing. For example, the Geodesy and Geodynamics Department is responsible for ensuring that Finland’s coordinate, elevation and gravity systems are up to date.
The building is also home to the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). A new section has also been built in conjunction with the building, housing FGI’s research equipment and other special functions.
The new facilities and laboratories were designed and their location was selected in cooperation with Senate Properties. The facilities were selected by partly applying multi-functional spaces to make them ideal for the research organisation’s needs.
‘Otaniemi is an excellent setting for research cooperation with other organisations, such as Aalto University. In addition, the organisations operating in the area have aimed to identify as many shared functions and services as possible. The area offers excellent transport connections and diverse services. I believe that the new facilities will also respond to the special needs of research in the future,’ says Jarkko Koskinen, Deputy Director General at FGI.
