Pietari, who comes from Oulu and currently lives in Pirkanmaa, works with a variety of service advisor tasks at the Tampere office. The core tasks of a service advisor include customer service in different channels, diverse information retrieval and analysis work, and the use of different systems and applications. Because the NLS’s field of operations is so broad, customer contacts can also concern almost anything between Earth and space.
‘We encounter customers through many different channels, and there is great variation in the contacts. Sometimes the issues to be clarified are straightforward and easy, and sometimes you get to do more extensive research in different databases and archives. There are many different sources of information used in the work, and finding the right information and helping the customer is rewarding. I find my work quite interesting and meaningful.’
Opportunities to find employment with many different educational backgrounds
Pietari has an interesting career and study path which is very useful in the role of a service advisor. He studied to be a cartographer through apprenticeship training and worked as a cartographer in the private sector. Pietari worked in field tasks, refined measurement data for use at an engineering office and advanced to measurement tasks for infrastructure sites. In addition, Pietari graduated as a Master of Science with information studies as the major subject at Tampere University. It was possible to study to for a Bachelor of Engineering degree in land surveying alongside the work, and Pietari completed this degree in summer 2023.
It is possible to find employment at the NLS with many different educational backgrounds, and based on your own initiative, it is possible to develop your competences by studying alongside work or seeking work in projects that you find interesting.
‘I became interested in the operations of the NLS years ago through information studies. In my role as a service advisor, I can combine the perspective of academic education with my work and study background in land surveying. When my current position opened for applications, I became interested in the job. My work has provided a lot of meaningful challenges and successes.’
Pietari also says that teamwork and colleagues are important factors in his work.
‘We have a really good work team. Especially in busy times, colleagues play a big role in the everyday work. We help each other and enjoy working together. In a wider perspective, the NLS’s customer service has access to good cooperation and support channels throughout the organisation, so help and support are always available.’
