In 2022, global events continued to affect the NLS’s activities. The renewed NLS Data Balance Sheet shows that the importance of e-services increased, which also highlighted the need to develop operational models for serving customers.

Securing the information and services of the NLS was even more central to the organisation’s activities in 2022. The NLS’s information management has not been compromised by the change in the global security situation.

Open access to information was subject to public debate in 2022. In response to this discussion, the NLS has assessed what information should be openly provided in the future.

Current information and active collaboration are important

The increasing significance of information at different levels of society is a recognised change factor in the NLS’s strategy. The information maintained by the NLS contributes to ensuring the stability of the society.

– Data are used as the basis of electronic services, and they also play a key role in using AI and automated decision-making systems, for example. The NLS’s information management and the related processes will be developed to respond to the changing needs of society and our customers. A significant part of the development is carried out in collaboration with various operators such as authorities and companies, says Petri Korpinen, Deputy Director General of the NLS.

Renewed Data Balance Sheet describes information management in plain language

The role of data balance sheets as a platform for information utilisation and the related reporting has recently been highlighted in Finland. The NLS Data Balance Sheet was drafted as a collaboration of a diverse group of experts and supports these purposes.

The NLS is responsible for the maintenance and administration of a variety of property, apartment, map, geospatial and research data. The latest Data Balance Sheet has a new layout, and it describes the NLS’s overall information management in plain language. The new balance sheet includes more KPIs than before.

The Data Balance Sheet supports good information management and compliance. The NLS Data Balance Sheet includes descriptions of the principles and practices used to ensure data are processed and used responsibly and securely. For individual datasets, their use and impact on society are presented in addition to annual KPIs.

The Data Balance Sheet includes an assessment of the current state of the NLS’s information management and suggestions for development.
