The National Land Survey of Finland’s (NLS) Responsibility for the Earth programme has been updated after its first three years.
‘Measurable goals linked to the NLS’s general and research strategy are at the core of the new programme. We want to address the perspectives of society, the environment, people, the economy and good governance in decision making, research, development and daily activities,’ says Mirva Kipinoinen, Director of Communications at the NLS.
Through the sustainability programme, we here at the NLS want to lead the way towards a sustainable future and also inspire others to provide data and solutions for the needs of a sustainable society.
‘Sustainability is a key goal not only for the NLS but also for our stakeholders. For example, climate change and biodiversity loss were raised as important themes in our personnel’s value workshops and stakeholder interviews conducted during the preparation of our strategy,’ Kipinoinen says.
Towards the goals through acts of sustainability
The NLS advances its sustainability goals through concrete acts of sustainability. They are acts that increase the handprint of the NLS’s activities for society or reduce the footprint of any negative impact.
In 2025, the NLS will promote nine new acts of sustainability and continue an act selected last year, as a result of which the NLS’s carbon footprint will be calculated for the first time. The new acts of sustainability also improve the accessibility of the website, climate pilot projects for land consolidation and the sense of togetherness in the NLS’s working communities.
The NLS is committed to promoting a total of 50 acts of sustainability by the end of 2027. The journey towards this target is proceeding well, as 49 acts of sustainability have also been selected for 2022–2025.
‘We will continue to select new acts of sustainability each year, even after the target has been achieved. The acts of sustainability will be implemented and led from the beginning as part of the basic activities of responsible units,’ Kipinoinen says.
From responsibility to sustainability
As a result of the new sustainability programme, the NLS has shifted from responsibility to sustainability.
‘By using the term ‘sustainability’, we seek to focus more on sustainable development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. What is more, sustainability places the strategic significance of our activities and goals better in the spotlight,’ Kipinoinen says.
The update can also be seen on the NLS website, which presents the new acts of sustainability, including their metrics, as well as the acts of sustainability selected for 2025 on their basis.
