Growth in Finland through science – the National Land Survey of Finland opens 7 postdoc positions

Economic growth calls for innovation and expertise. The new postdoc positions opened at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) of the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) play an important role in achieving this goal.

Seven postdoctoral researcher positions have been opened for application at FGI. They offer an opportunity to conduct societally significant research.

‘The new postdoc positions are a unique opportunity for career development in geospatial data. The new postdoctoral researchers will be at a vantage point, conducting significant research, the results of which will be used broadly in society. In conducting research, we are engaged in continuous cooperation with companies and other key stakeholders in the sector,’ says Mari Laakso, Research Director at the NLS.

For several years, FGI has been ranked as number one research organisation in the Research Council of Finland’s statistics on the impact of science. Geospatial data and research related to it are needed to solve various societal and environmental challenges.

These new positions, now open for application, focus on different areas of geospatial data research. There are positions available in each of FGI’s four research departments: Geodesy and Geodynamics; Geoinformatics and Cartography; Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry; as well as Navigation and Positioning.

Users of research from the forest sector to startups and NASA

The results of FGI’s research are used broadly. For example, methods developed in laser scanning help the Finnish forest industry save tens of millions of euros each year. Companies are important users of research results and shared data, while innovation originating from research has sparked interest even in NASA, resulted in new spin-offs and provided companies with opportunities to turn innovation into business.

R&D investments seek growth

The new positions are part of the postdoc programme of government research organisations to strengthen R&D expertise in key areas of society and business. Postdoctoral researchers conduct significant high-quality research, combining science, industry and governance. The programme is funded from Finland’s multiannual plan for research and development funding.
