Sakeri has been working at the NLS since 2017. He graduated from the University of Helsinki as a Master of Science and Doctor in ecology and evolutionary biology. Later, Sakeri completed a Master of Science in Engineering degree in geoinformatics at Aalto University. The Master of Science in Engineering degree led him to the NLS. After graduating, Sakeri got a permanent job working with the address information system.
Sakeri currently works as a senior specialist in the core geospatial data production, which maintains topographic data, aerial photography data and terrain elevation models, for example. For example, topographic maps are based on this data. Sakeri is one of the people responsible for the data of the National Terrain Database. He is responsible for the instructions and development of data collection related to land use, land cover and terrain details at the NLS. At the moment, his work tasks are largely related to the development and implementation of the new topographic data production system.
The best thing about Sakeri’s work is its broad scope.
‘We maintain a wide range of information related to diverse use cases. Use cases can be related to moving in nature, monitoring the state of the environment and land use planning. In my current job, I can also make use of my earlier background as a biologist. The work includes cooperation with different kinds of people both inside and outside the organisation. We have a lot of cooperation with other government agencies, for example,’ says Sakeri.
Enthusiasm for working at the NLS already started during his studies. Geospatial data methods became familiar to him through biology studies and his research for dissertation. The field of geospatial data felt attractive, and Sakeri applied for studies for a Master of Science in Engineering degree at Aalto University.
‘At Aalto University, we visited the NLS to learn about their operations, and there was a good contact during the visit that I remembered later. When it became the time to write my thesis, I decided to get in touch with them and ask if there was any topic for the thesis here. And I’m still on the same path!’
