Hanne, who currently works as an information service manager and the supervisor of an area of responsibility with 34 employees, joined the NLS in 2010. Hanne graduated from the University of Turku with a Master of Laws degree. In her studies, she specialised in property law, and her first job at the NLS as a legal counsel for registrations was closely related to this field. Hanne completed court training soon after her studies, which means that she holds the Finnish ‘varatuomari’ (Master of Laws with court training) title.
The tasks of the area of responsibility managed by Hanne include tasks related to the development of information services and customer communication, working with customers and stakeholders, contract and permit management, promoting the sharing of geospatial data, and customer service background support. Employees produce webinars and training courses every year and participate in a wide range of events and customer meetings. As is often the case at the NLS, the employees work in different parts of Finland. Hanne and the team members communicate a lot via Teams or during walking meetings with their phones on their ears. Hanne’s main task is to lead her team members with a coaching approach. In addition to the daily supervisory work, Hanne is involved in the preparation of various agreements and decisions concerning information services, as well as in some customer meetings. And like all NLS supervisors, Hanne participates in the work of her management team and thereby contributes to the development of the operations of her unit.
It pays to seize new opportunities
In her career, Hanne has been involved in many things. She has worked at an accounting firm, district court and law firms, among other things. At the NLS, Hanne started as a legal counsel in property -related tasks, allowing her to solve large-scale registration matters that included aspects subject to interpretation. From this position, Hanne moved on to work as a contract lawyer. In 2021, she started in her current position.
‘I have always been interested in developing myself, and I appreciate the fact that we have the opportunity to advance in our careers and study alongside our work. In addition to work, I have studied for specialist vocational qualifications in product development and management. The advancement from specialist to supervisor was an exciting leap into something new. The support of a more experienced supervisor was of great help in this process. When I started, I received mentoring from another supervisor, which has been immensely helpful. It certainly pays to take new challenges and training opportunities!’
The best thing about the work is people
According to Hanne, the best thing about her work is definitely the people. The work community is inspiring and highly skilled. Cooperation with customer organisations and other authorities works very well and an important part of the work. The work involves a great responsibilities and varies a lot. When working for the Finnish Government, one can contribute in a concrete way to ensuring that tax funds are used responsibly and that they bring maximum benefits to society, other authorities, companies and citizens.
So what sparked Hanne’s interest in the NLS?
‘Frankly, I didn’t know much about the operations of the NLS in advance. When a legal counsel’s position opened here, I noticed that the job description contained many elements that had interested me already during my studies. I’ve stayed on this path, and it says something about the success of the employer that I’ve remained with the organisation for more than 14 years,’ says Hanne.
