Social significance is one of the best things about my work – Miika’s career story

Miika Kekola

Miika, who graduated from the University of Lapland with a Master of Laws degree, joined the NLS in early 2022. Miika works as a legal counsel in apartment matters and has been closely involved in the development of the Residential and Commercial Property Information System. The Residential and Commercial Property Information System involves a major reform covering the whole of Finland in which paper-based housing company share certificates will become obsolete and ownership information will instead be maintained in an electronic register.

Miika previously worked in the banking sector as a legal counsel and in investing. During the years in banking, the NLS was often involved in Miika’s work tasks in one way or another. At that time, apartment matters began to particularly interest him. Miika also received a positive image of the NLS’s customer service and specialists. When the position of a legal counsel opened at the NLS, Miika immediately submitted his application.

‘At the application stage, I had no idea how interesting the work I would end up doing would be. The Residential and Commercial Property Information System is a completely new and socially significant project. I consider the societal impact as one of the best things in my work.’

Miika’s work tasks have been related to the Residential and Commercial Property Information System in one way or another. There are also smaller-scale development projects running at the same time that are related to topics such as the mass digitalisation of share certificates in banks’ safe deposit boxes and various artificial intelligence experiments. For Miika, it is important that the employer trusts the employees and that the development activities include the freedom to try something completely new.

Miika, who lives in an idyllic rural environment at his own horse farm, also greatly appreciates the fact that it is easy to balance work and leisure time. It is also possible to develop one’s own skills further alongside the work. For example, Miika has studied courses in business studies at the Open University and the Open University of Applied Sciences. In the future, Miika would be interested in working even more with development. There are a lot of interesting jobs available at the NLS: Miika could well see himself as a development manager or in Information Management in a more IT-oriented position, for example. In a large organisation, there are great opportunities to develop and advance in one’s career.
