Original documents are no longer needed for property registrations

Getting property registrations handled will become easier on 1 November, when original documents are no longer necessary. The change makes things easier, especially following the transfer of title to a property. For example, in property purchases, divorces, or estate distributions following a death, original documents are no longer necessary. In future, a scanned version of a bill of sale, lease agreement, or a deed of estate distribution will be sufficient.

Better online services

When original documents are no longer necessary, getting cases handled will become easier. In future, it will become easier to handle property registration matters using the National Land Survey's e-services. Given that electronic transactions are fast and secure, some of our service e-mail addresses will be taken out of use early next year. For example, property registration applications will not be accepted via the email address kirjaamisasiat@maanmittauslaitos.fi.

Background: changes in the Code of Real Estate

The reform is based on changes affecting the Code of Real Estate. These legislative changes will enter into force on 1 November. The changes will improve the handling of matters related to property registrations. The most significant improvement to the customer is the disappearance of the requirement to submit original documents. The legislative change will also affect other matters related to property registrations, such as the registration of the division of possession between joint owners.
