Automated decision making takes a leap forward

Automated decision making, or more officially the automated resolution process, means that a system, not a person, resolves applications submitted by customers. A person will only participate in the process if additional clarifications or similar are required to resolve the matter. Detailed lawful processing rules have been pre-defined for the system, which it uses to make a decision.

Automation has a long history at the National Land Survey of Finland

At the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS), automated decisions have already been made for several years in the registration of properties. When confirming mortgaging or transferring an electronic mortgage deed through the Property Transaction Service, decisions can have been received in only a few seconds. The new act entered into force in 2023 defines how automated decision making can be planned and implemented in more detail. We have investigated the automated decisions made at the NLS and ensured that they meet the requirements laid down in the new act. In addition, we have prepared the adoption decisions required by law for the automated decisions used at present.

Digital services of the authorities are quicker and easier to use

Electronic services save time and can be used whenever it is the most convenient for customers. The quicker and easier use of services ensures a smoother ride to the destination, be it the sale of a summer cottage or a dream of a renovation. Here at the NLS, we are constantly focusing on the development of digital services and also seek to use automated decision making more extensively in the near future.
