The Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) is the leading specialist organisation on GNSS in Finland.

A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) offers an easy way to determine place, speed and time. Today, satellite positioning is used in many everyday functions. The development has been rapid during the past few years: old systems are being renewed and many new systems, such as the European Galileo, are about to be completed. The development of receivers has also been fast, from small chips to large base station receivers. Smart traffic and the Internet of Things have for their part advanced and accelerated the development.

Applications of satellite positioning include:

  • Traffic and logistics on land, at sea and in the air
  • Time and the synchronisation of time
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Land surveying and mapping
  • Coordinate systems
  • Spatial data
  • Recreation (e.g. exercise, hiking, games, finding targets)

The Finnish Geospatial Research Institute’s researchers have expertise in all areas of satellite positioning from signal processing and navigation to extremely precise coordinate determination.  

Our goals are:

  • Conducting scientific research in the different areas of satellite positioning
  • Producing independent data on satellite positioning and its possibilities for the society and companies
  • Supporting companies and the society and collaborating in questions related to satellite positioning
  • Awareness of the coordinate systems of different positioning systems and those used in Finland
  • Sharing information

Arctic-PNT

This project will identify and analyse the role of Aurora SNOWBOX as a key infrastructure in the Nordic Hub of the Arctic PNT Innovation Platform, especially with regards to positioning and navigation needs for autonomous driving in Arctic conditions.

GEMOP: Galileo and EGNOS Monitoring Of Performances by Member States

The GEMOP project monitors the performance of the Galileo and EGNOS positioning systems. The project is funded by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), and there are 26 research institutes involved in the consortium. Finnish Geospatial Research Institute provides satellite positioning data from Finland and computes performance indicators related to the Galileo satellite availability and positioning accuracy in ranging domain.

GNSS signal quality monitoring in Finland (GNSS-Finland)

GNSS-Finland (Global Navigation Satellite System signal quality monitoring in Finland) will use the Finnish National GNSS network ‘FinnRef’ in first-hand monitoring of the status of GNSS signal quality over Finland. A prototype information infrastructure will be developed for interference monitoring capability based on recorded FinnRef data, in order to offer near real-time information of the perceived GNSS signal quality in Finland.

Posiva

The Finnish Geodetic Institute studies crustal deformations at the candidate sites for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The project started when the research networks were founded in Olkiluoto, Kivetty and Romuvaara in 1994-1995.  The networks consist of concrete observation pillars used for periodical GPS campaign measurements of coordinates.

Finalising surveys for the Baltic motorways of the sea (FAMOS Odin)

Reliable surveyed shipping routes are a major pillar of the marine transport infrastructure and a precondition for the safety of navigation at sea. The FAMOS project aims to improve the safety of marine transport by improving the depth data in the Baltic Sea. With improved bathymetry information transport routes can be better optimized for fuel efficiency. Under Keel Clearance awareness is improved by more reliable depth calculations.

FGI-GSRx software receiver

The FGI-GSRx software receiver has been extensively used as a research platform for the last one decade in different national and international Research and Development (R&D) projects to develop, test and validate novel receiver processing algorithms for robust, resilient and precise Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT).

HASlib: an open-source decoder

HASlib is an open-source software package intended to facilitate the adoption of the Galileo High Accuracy Service (HAS) with legacy receivers and processing software that lack native support for HAS. The use of HAS is free of charge and enables up to 20 cm horizontal position accuracy with the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) approach.
