MIXER

The MIXER project studies the interaction between vehicles and their drivers: how to make operating the vehicles safe, intuitive, and transparent. We apply research in artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction to offer new ways to operate vehicle controls, information systems and navigation, while paying attention to surroundings and the task at hand. This interaction is becoming more complex. We seek solutions that decrease that complexity with novel interaction technologies.

Passenger cars are turning into computers on wheels with increasingly automated driving, which poses new challenges to design car-driver-interfaces for safe and efficient use. Heavy machines (e. g. harvesters, harbor cranes) have been using automation for decades, but now they are facing new demand for AI-assisted, even autonomous operation. These developments change the roles of drivers and operators from traditional driving into coordinating the functions of various information systems and observing their status. These new tasks ask for new solutions. The trend towards remote operation underlines these demands.

Multimodal interaction technologies offer new ways for interaction. MIXER develops new solutions for haptic feedback, directional audio, gaze tracking and extended reality, together with their applications in vehicles. AI tools can support and augment complex tasks, but for vehicle use they must be safe, transparent, and non-intrusive. This can decrease the need for training and reduce machine downtime. Adapting into the operator’s experience and preferences can make vehicles more efficient and accommodating.

The MIXER project brings in collaboration important companies with expertise in the fields of heavy machines, car systems, and digital technologies. Together with universities, they seek to apply research into vehicles and systems, demonstrating selected technologies and testing them with actual users.
