Vessel Operations and Routing in Ice Conditions VORIC

Voric is a two-year research project in the Arctic Seas programme of Tekes. It is coordinated by Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). Industry partners in the consortium represent key players in the Finnish industry of Arctic marine transport and its support services.

The main objectives of the project are:

  • To support globally scalable techniques for providing ice, sea, and weather information, and the development of sources for relevant information.
  • To enable development of new services for shipping companies with vessels operating in Arctic waters.

The central research and development innovations include:

  • A ship specific ice resistance and risk map and a novel route optimization method based on that information.
  • An improved model of the performance of ice-going ships using real-world data.
