Reference Systems
Unified coordinate reference systems, ubiquitous satellite positioning and modern communication techniques have made it possible to use geoinformation in new applications and to also create markets for business. Even greater demands will be expected in the future in terms of reliability, accuracy and the real-time tracking of temporal changes. The FGI ensures that modern and precise reference systems are available for users.
The FGI maintains and develops national reference systems, their connection to international networks, geospatial metrology and research in the following areas:
- Maintenance, renewal and control of temporal variation in the Finnish coordinate reference system (EUREF-FIN); maintenance and development of the Finnish permanent GNSS network (FinnRef) and research in positioning; expert tasks related to the reference systems;
- National height system N2000 and older national height systems, the national precise levelling network, measurements and land uplift modelling;
- National gravity system, tracking of the temporal and spatial variation of gravity, national geoid model FIN2005N00; gravity measurements and related research;
- Developing the Metsähovi Fundamental Station as part of a global geodetic network;
- Maintaining national metrological standards for length and the acceleration of free fall; instrument calibrations and calibration services and baseline measurements as a part of the work of the National Standards Laboratory;
- Maintaining and developing the photogrammetric test field that is used for the radiometric and geometric calibration of air- and satellite-borne images;
- Maintaining and developing a laser test field for calibrating airborne and mobile laser sensors.
