Finnish Grid and Cloud Infrastructure (FGCI)
Computing is rapidly developing to be distributed over the internet. People already regularly store their personal emails and photographs in the servers of huge commercial companies like Google and Facebook, without any knowledge or interest where the information is physically stored. This development has become possible due to advances in computer science, physics, and engineering, as well as in globalization in business and political integration, which have enabled fast computers and rapid and reliable transfer of information over the globe. Scientific computing has been at the forefront of developing Grid and Cloud computing technology. This infrastructure application proposal outlines a way to develop a distributed Grid and Cloud computing infrastructure in Finland. It will at the same time provide scientists with state-of-the-art distributed computing capacity, for use in all fields of science, and develop further distributed computing solutions.
