Updating of maps

Traditionally, maps are based on visually interpreted and manually measured information represented with map symbols easily understandable to humans. Remote sensing provides raster images with plenty of useful and up-to-date information, which, however, is hard to compare with the original map data. By the use of advanced updating techniques and knowledge-based interpretation approaches, the Finnish Geodetic Institute aims at developing automatic methods to be used in the updating process. In many cases, the updating can be based on object-oriented change detection. Important subprojects are

  • Knowledge-based methods for image interpretation
  • Automatic methods for change detection and updating
  • Use of laser scanning and aerial images in map updating
  • Use of SAR images in map updating
