Spruce bark beetle damage can be controlled through early detection – new remote sensing methods enable monitoring
Sufficiently early detection and risk management help control tree damage caused by spruce bark beetles. Remote sensing enables new methods to detect damage already when swarming begins.

The 30-year-old network of FinnRef stations forms the basis of Finland’s geospatial data
Our society uses geospatial data round the clock. This would not be possible without FinnRef, Finland’s network of GNSS base stations, which turns 30 this year. Over the years, stations have been replaced by more modern ones, and at the same time, their number has been increased to respond to the growing need for geospatial data in society.

Self-driving cars can soon detect slippery road surfaces
This winter, the self-driving car of the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) of the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) will operate in normal traffic to collect data about challenging traffic conditions. It allows researchers to train AI to detect any slippery parts of the road and other adverse factors to help autonomous vehicles also operate in winter conditions in the future.

Unmanned airship produces accurate information about bark beetle damage in Koli
Pest populations that kill spruce-dominated forests are growing, and damaged areas are spreading towards north year after year. In Koli, research scientists used an unmanned airship for the first time to prevent and limit forest damage.

The passage of ships through ice and darkness was made easier with satellite tracking and AI
By recognising ice tracks, the situational awareness of the ships was improved through AI, sensors, and satellite tracking. Through technology, the navigation of ships through ice and darkness can be made easier, and future traffic of self-steering ships can be advanced.

Unveiling the Origin of the First Instrumentally Recorded Iron Meteorite Fall
A fireball observed over Sweden in 2020 produced a rare iron meteorite. In a recent study, Ukrainian and Finnish researchers calculated the iron meteorite's orbit and possible origin that shed light on the early stages of our solar system's formation. As a result, this is the very first iron meteorite with known orbit.

Savings of tens of millions with new collection methods of forest data
When the forest data collection methods developed by researchers are introduced in Finland, significant savings will be achieved in forest trade, and the accurate data will also help support biodiversity.
